What this site is

The Arkansas River valley at Fort Smith — the river, the two ranges, the coalfield beneath the valley and the federal court that sat here.

Sebastian County Online is a reading site about one river valley: the Arkansas between the Ozarks to the north and the Ouachitas to the south, the Arkoma Basin beneath it, the coal that came out of the basin, the towns the coal put on the map, and the federal court that sat at Fort Smith.

It is not the county, any city, the courts or any agency, and it carries none of their services or records. The writing here is about ground, water and rock, and about the people whose work followed from them.

How it is arranged

Six sections. The river and the ranges are the physical ground. The seam is what lies under it and what was done about that. The navigation is the river after it was engineered. The court is the law that was placed here, and the five nations whose territory that law was laid over. The towns are what the mines and sidings left standing.

Every entry on the site is reachable from the strip at the top of every page, and all of them are on one list.
